Police urge businesses to install video surveillance in effort to deter robbers

By JON WILLING, OTTAWA SUN

If stores want to protect their staff and avoid being targets of robberies, they should invest in surveillance equipment, an Ottawa major crime detective says.

Det. Sgt. Ken Doyle estimates 25% of commercial robberies Ottawa police investigate involve businesses that don't have digital or video surveillance systems.

"Many of the stores in Ottawa don't understand the need for surveillance equipment," Doyle said.

But even if a store has surveillance gear, it doesn't mean it will help police.

Doyle said there have been incidents where the equipment wasn't maintained and the image qualities were poor.

Major crime investigators have had their hands full this past week with numerous robberies.
